Serge Nikolich - Creative Director

Serge Nikolich believes that everything that can be designed and improved, should be. He is constantly looking for better ways to help users interact with websites, and is on a quest to devise the perfect interactive experience. Serge believes that an interface must pass the test of logic and functionality in order for design to make sense, allowing visitors to fall in love with a site’s beauty, simplicity and ease of use.

Serge's background is in traditional print design. For the last two decades, he has been involved in numerous product launch campaigns, helping to design creative and tactical print promotions for his pharmaceutical clients. He created his first HTML site in 1994, and started developing user interfaces in Macromedia Director right about the time that Compact Disc became talk of the town.

Serge started building sites with Drupal in 2009 in the belief that every designer should know thoroughly the medium for which he is designing.

Anne Easterling - Developer

One of those print media folks who’ve made the smart transition to digital media, Anne Easterling built her first Drupal site in version 4.7, converting a hand-coded HTML site and successfully integrating CiviCRM on the first try. After building and running Drupal sites for non-profit organizations for several years, Anne turned her focus to theming and the user experience. Anne believes that what makes Drupal so powerful for front-end developers is the theming layer, and that when theming is done properly, there is an elegance in how the data is structured and rendered.

Anne has been responsible for building and maintaining themes for sites ranging from small mini-sites to large, high-traffic sites, working on up to ten sites at one time. Anne is always improving to her core strengths in CSS and HTML and adding to her Drupal skills. She loves finding the right module to make building pages easier, making sites look and function properly on different platforms, and moving toward HTML5 and CSS3.

A native Texan, Anne now lives with her husband and their two cats in Central Florida, just two miles north of Disney World. When the weather allows, she enjoys working on the patio, where she can hear the steam train whistle from the Magic Kingdom. She’s a theme park junkie who ends every day watching fireworks from her back door!

Christopher Spiker - Developer

Christopher Spiker became hooked on Drupal as a CMS when it was recommended to him by a friend for a site his publishing business required. He dropped his business and now does Drupal development full-time (when not exchanging bear roars with his toddler). Chris has worked on third-party integration, custom modules, and e-commerce, and has print and online design experience. And he's happy to use his editing experience to advise on content (hint: less is usually more). His Drupal skills include PHP, custom module development, and site design and configuration, and he empathizes with non-technical users.

Edward Zwart - Developer

Computer science is underrated as a natural bridge between language arts and hard core science. My background in linguistics, literature and education turned out to be better preparation than I would have guessed for a degree in computer science -- a field, after all, one of whose major features is a large set of languages. And just like linguists don’t compare languages in terms of superiority or inferiority, I am very much an agnostic when it comes to classic “code wars” which can sometimes plague the software development community. As an art, writing good software is like writing good prose. Many of the same principles apply, such as clarity, consistency, and accuracy. It turns out that writing concise, even elegant, code that is (and this is critical) meaningful to a user is very similar to writing effective copy for an intended audience.

I was originally drawn to Drupal for its power and flexibility and its potential for use as an application framework. The other thing that immediately blew me away was (and still is) the amazing open source community! I'm a strong believer in open source. It's extremely important as a viable and necessary community-based initiative. And whether it’s contributing in the issue queue or making new connections at Drupalcons and summits, participating in the Drupal community is one of the biggest rewards.

My main interest as a developer is back end development and architectural design, but like most Drupal developers, I also often find myself working in the front end including site building and theming. My personal interests include science, politics and education. And when I’m not waxing philosophical about reforming one of the latter two, I can also sometimes be found off cycling, curling, or hand drumming.

Kathy Chavez - Developer

Kathy Chavez has been doing Web design and development for sixteen years, starting with straight HTML sites made with Dreamweaver, and then moving on to Mambo and WordPress. Her first experience with Drupal was as a PM interfacing with clients doing wireframing/architecture and putting vision and goals to paper. She then moved on to development and theming, and can take a site from concept to PSD to buildout to launch. One of her specialties is reverse engineering, and she is currently ramping up her custom module building chops.

Kathy is very active in the Drupal Community, and is currently working on DrupalCon Denver, helping to organize the pre-conference trainings. She is also involved with the Denver/Bolder DrupalChix meetup group as a co-organizer and presenter. In addition, Kathy has started her own online study group, Drupalista Study Group, which works together to learn more about custom module building and Drupal stuff in general.

The one thing Kathy loves better than anything is being a mom to her two wonderful daughters. When she's not being a track mom, playing with Drupal, or trying to keep up on her skills you'll find her listening to books, playing RockBand or in the battlefields on WoW.

Trent Wyman is a detail-oriented, highly versatile, and self motivated web developer, with skills in graphic design, Drupal development, and Drupal theming.  Experienced in all phases of the project life cycle, including requirements gathering, labor estimations, project management, and project development, he is able to see the bigger picture when undertaking even the smallest of tasks. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Interactive Media Design from The Art Institute of Atlanta, Trent is also a passionate visual designer, well versed in visual communications and UI design. It is Trent’s philosophy that “traditional and innovative design should be harmonious in order to create eye-catching designs that are both cutting-edge and user-friendly – usability should not be sacrificed for the sake of ‘eye-candy’”.

  • Detail-oriented professional, skilled in graphic design, project management, and web development
  • 9+ years experience in creating graphics and content for print and web production
  • 7+ years experience creating web sites and online media for medium-sized businesses and corporations
  • 5 years as a full-time Drupal developer and theming specialist, creating, maintaining, and supporting many custom Drupal sites for large-scale and enterprise level businesses
  • Key strengths include: client interaction, front-end design, CSS, Drupal development and Drupal theming

When it comes to Drupal development, Trent considers himself an “Everyday Drupalist”. One who is not an uber-code wiz, but rather a practical problem solver who leans more towards simplicity and community leverage versus over-thinking, over-developing, and re-inventing the wheel. Trent also gives back to the Drupal Community through Drupalcamp lectures, sessions, and sponsorship participation. In his spare time, he enjoys life with his lovely wife and daughter and manages to squeeze in a little time to work the restoration of his 1955 Cadillac Coupe DeVille.

North Studio

Dieter Gerhard - President and CEO

As our President and CEO, Dieter is in charge of general oversight of every aspect of northStudio. He also considers it his responsibility to ensure that our office is a place of personal growth and development for staff. Dieter strives to shape a team of people who not only enjoy their work, but who are also at the top of their respective fields.

Known for both his bull dog tenacity and his generosity, Dieter is equal parts hard ass and softie. In the business sphere, his greatest strengths are his sharp, analytical mind, his capacity for deductive reasoning, and his eye for development potential. On a personal level, he cares deeply about his staff, and mentoring has become an important facet of his job, heading North Studio.

Dieter gets great pleasure out of watching staff members succeed and grow into their own. He also finds that the youthful energy in the office helps him keep in touch with today’s marketplace. Outside of the office, Dieter runs the popular Birds of a Feather Oceanfront Bed and Breakfast, and in the summer months, he can often be found out on the water in his zodiac conducting Marine Eco Tours. Boating and travel are his two biggest passions. Being out in the open ocean gives him the opportunity to connect with nature, especially here on the beautiful west coast, and travel is a chance to explore the world and experience other cultures. Dieter’s top spots include Germany, where his family origins are, and New Zealand because of the friendly and gracious people and diverse geography. In fact, New Zealand reminds him of Vancouver Island.

Dieter's favourite spot to unwind since 1980 is Negril, Jamaica where he enjoys a special connection with the locals. Dieter has "adopted" a Jamaican family, ensuring among other things they receive an education. Always the thrill seeker, Dieter enjoys activities like skydiving, para-sailing, horse-back riding, hot air ballooning, and touring in submarines while on his travels.

Karen Smallwood - Vice President

Karen is the vice president and a web developer using a Drupal interface, and she is also an instructor at our sister school, Q College, teaching the Drupal Open Source Development course. Karen, herself, is a graduate of Q College's (formerly VSBT) Web Designer course and the Open Source Development course! Karen’s role as web developer for northStudio means that she helps build Drupal websites for clients.

Her contribution to a project involves information architecture and figuring out how the back end of a website will be structured. Karen’s tasks also include fine-tuning a site’s details, such as customizing features and theming. What invigorates Karen is the investigative process that is a part of web development.

Karen’s natural inquisitiveness and love of experimentation make her amazing at implementing new modules. Her sensitivity to the user experience also helps her find ways to make website functions easier and clearer to navigate. What Karen loves most about her job is that it provides the context for her to experiment and learn new things (or learn different ways to do the same thing!). She additionally enjoys the diversity of northStudio’s team members.

In her off time, Karen loves snowboarding, canoeing, cuddling her pup, and sitting shotgun on the flights her husband pilots.

Ryan James - Chief Technology Officer

As an Open Source Programmer, Ryan specializes in custom programming and E-commerce. For the former, Ryan writes all of the one-off software that falls outside of general development, which basically entails any nonstandard modification to Drupal’s usual functioning. This can include tasks like custom registration forms and third party integration with sites like Facebook and Twitter. For E-Commerce programming, he is responsible for setting up stores, setting up products, and dealing with sales tax.

Ryan’s background includes a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Victoria, and he also interned at northStudio prior to working here. What Ryan is best at is the “really hard stuff”. He loves the mental challenge of finding solutions to our toughest technical issues. For Ryan, working with people who like to have fun is a major job perk—at North Studio, we work hard, and we play hard!

Outside of the office, Ryan’s passions include sports, such as hockey, softball, mountain biking, and skiing, as well as gadgets and computer games.

Becky Gratton Wilson - Chief Administrative Officer

Becky is, without a doubt, the glue that holds our office together. She has moved her way up in the ranks from Q College (formerly VSBT) student, to northStudio intern, to Solutions Architect, and now holds the official title of Chief Administrative Officer.

As Dieter’s right hand, Becky oversees everything to do with the day-to-day running of the office—including management of all of the logistical details and accounting matters. Being someone who is supremely organized, supremely logical, and supremely good at multitasking, Becky is a master at keeping North Studio plates spinning. As she describes it, she has a brain like a filing cabinet: everything has a place, and it’s there for good reason. Her philosophy is: ‘if your system relies on logic, you don’t need to have a perfect memory!’

What Becky loves most about her job is the fact that there is always something new going on. The work environment is constantly changing, which keeps her on her toes. She would get bored in a quiet office.

Outside of work, Becky is a “do-it-yourselfer”. She enjoys being productive in a very literal sense: she likes to make things herself. She enjoys home renovations (she recently refinished her basement), numerous crafts, cooking, knitting, and gardening. Her biggest passions, though, are travel and her love, Dylan.

Candace Bates - Project Manager

As a project captain of the northStudio team, Candace’s role in the company is to work closely with the account manager to provide the initial points of contact for clients. The account manager establishes the preliminary relationship, and then passes the baton to Candace, who organizes the logistics of the work queue to begin production. From then on, Candace is the project leader overseeing progress and acting as the liaison between our team and clients.

What makes Candace such a superstar is not only the obvious—her strong leadership ability, her communication skills, and her foresight with projects—but also how well she knows the northStudio staff and our skill sets, figuring out who is best for which task. Candace’s big picture vision is invaluable to finding the solution that will work for both the client and North Studio.

Candace loves the dynamic, creative environment northStudio provides as it offers her the space to grow both personally and professionally. She thrives on the uniqueness of each project and the opportunities to craft creative, individualized solutions to meet clients’ needs. Ever the adventurous spirit, when she’s not in the office, Candace is likely to be doing something sporty, whether it’s playing football or basketball, yoga, running, biking, swimming, or her favourite: surfing.

Having worked in her past life as a creative director for large creative corporations and boutique studios, her impressive portfolio includes Disney and Microsoft. Since arriving in Canada six years ago, she has added icon and user interface design to her skill set, developing icons and interfaces for international technology companies. Vanda loves art, culture and the great outdoors, she readily admits she's a devoted fan of elegant design, surfing, sustainability and handmade furniture. So it comes as no surprise that when she's not in the office she may be found planning a getaway, drawing or attempting to grow her own organic veggies.

Amelia Bennett - Developer

As a Web Developer, Amelia does a little bit of everything, from developing to making icons to theming, which as a visual perfectionist, is her favourite. Amelia arrived at northStudio after pursuing her unofficial hobby—computers. After trying out every occupation imaginable, she completed Drupal courses and a Web Development and Internet Marketing certificate at Q College (formerly VSBT).

With her hopeless addiction to the internet and a love of computers, art and problem solving, she is now in the world she belongs in. Amelia loves cartooning, doodling and messing around in Photoshop, and plans to build a website specifically for her art. She favours cartoon animals, but is also a real-life animal lover, having had cats, dogs, rabbits, chickens, ducks, horses and rats. If there’s something that can be a pet, she’s probably had it. She is considered to be rather eccentric, in a computer ninja/vampire sort of way.

When she’s not on the computer, she spends her time avoiding daylight. She loves art, books, video games, gaming and random internet browsing. Amelia is a self-professed nerd—it’s what she does. If you don’t believe it, ask her to show you her computer-nerd Barbie doll.

After investigating a several content management systems, he settled on Drupal because it gave him the features and flexibility he was looking for.

Ray’s first Drupal website was a sports team stock exchange game, and even today he still has a strong interest in building sports (and music) related websites. His first website ever, a sports pool website, originally built with Perl, was rebuilt using DotNetNuke, and in 2010, rebuilt again on Drupal, and is still alive and well today.

Danielle Hobbs - Contractor

As an Open Source Developer, Danielle is our resident WordPress wizard, which means that she expertly creates websites using WordPress Content Management System. Danielle’s background is in XHTML, CSS, PHP, and open source development—specializing in WordPress development for northStudio.

Danielle’s interest in development was sparked at the Victoria School of Business and Technology (VSBT), northStudio’s sister school, where she completed the Web Developer Diploma Program. Since then, Danielle has continued to hone her craft, keeping up with advances and trends in her field. She dedicates a lot of her free time to researching what’s new in WordPress and Drupal communities and is fearless when it comes to experimenting with, and implementing, new and innovative development methods and ideas.

One of Danielle’s greatest strengths is her expedience in assessing what is required of a project and then promptly executing the best solution. As well, she is self-directed and driven, always learning new things on her own.

Danielle loves northStudio’s collaborative work environment. She loves the fact that she can always turn to colleagues with questions as she truly feels she is working with a team of experts. We all have our niches and specializations, so there is a lot we can learn from each other—and when we join forces, we are unstoppable! Another aspect of her job that she loves is delivering the finished product to clients: being able to bring clients’ visions to life and seeing their subsequent satisfaction is an immensely fulfilling conclusion to a project for Danielle.

On the weekends, Danielle is likely still working on websites, but she also makes time to enjoy the sunshine, good food, and most of all, her family.

I enjoy working with Danielle as she inspires me to look at new ideas - and she loves British comedy which is always a plus, innit?” –Karen Smallwood

Gregg Coppen - Contractor

Gregg Coppen is a project manager/developer with a designer’s eye, but a developer’s mindset. Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, his passion for websites has propelled him around the world, with jobs in South Africa, New York and London. He’s driven around the United States, travelled through Morocco, roughed it around Southern Africa and even “technology bartered” his way around Central and South America. You need a website? I need a place to stay. Let’s make this work.

After the birth of his daughter, Gregg’s jet-setting lifestyle finally landed him and his wife in Canada, where they could be part of a larger Drupal community. Prior to moving, Gregg did some research on northStudio and became intrigued with the prospect of working with a talented, capable, much larger team. With 3 years of Drupal experience and a few large community sites under his belt, Gregg tracked us down at Drupal Camp Alberta and northStudio decided it was a perfect match.

Having run his own web design, animation and development company alongside his designer/illustrator wife for eight years, Gregg’s specialty, is, well, everything! He’s used to running every aspect of a business, so there’s nothing he can’t do. He has a passion for good design & animation, enjoys creative technical problem solving and loves crafting great looking, standards driven web sites, powered by open source software like Drupal. He is also interested in iphone/ipad app development and is always looking for excuses to explore emerging technologies. All in all, this multi-talented guy is looking forward to settling in with a much larger team with a wide range of interests.

Gregg brings to us his massive skill-set, his attention to detail and his inexhaustible need to challenge himself. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, surfing, hiking and soon, snowboarding. He also enjoys longboarding, but not when he breaks his hand and the doctors remove the pins without anesthetic.
Tell us a random fact about yourself.

I also enjoy being a visualist (VJ) and have created and played animations and motion graphics live for a wide range of gigs & live events. I collect strange and interesting footage and animations from a broad range of sources and like to mash them up on the fly with live feeds to create interesting new compositions.

Amee Nijjar - Designer

As North Studio’s graphic designer, Amee is responsible for web design, marketing materials and everything in between. On any given day, you can find her creating templates and logos, editing photos, designing infographics and putting the finishing touches on websites before they go live. She also designs for mediums other than the web, including brochures, banners, posters and promotional videos.

Amee has always admired good graphic design. Growing up, she spent a lot of time online playing around with her own designs and admiring the work of others. So when she saw the Applied Communications Program at Camosun, a course offering everything from writing to photography to desktop design, she knew she was headed in the right direction. Amee finished her degree in Professional Communications at Royal Roads University, knowing she wanted to focus on graphic design. She loves making things visually appealing, being a part of the transformation process and seeing her designs go live on the web.

Outside of work, Amee is just as artistic. When she’s not eating or drinking coffee, she likes to paint, draw and take photos, and does freelance photography and design on the side. She also attends as many concerts, shows and festivals as possible and is currently planning her dream trip to South America.

Stacey Santos - Copywriter

As our copywriter, Stacey’s job is to write, edit and obsess over punctuation. She creates blog posts, articles, web content and everything in between. Originally from Saskatoon, Stacey swapped her ski pants for a rain jacket and pursued a physics degree at UVic. Two years into it, she realized a few things: Professors don’t award bonus marks for editing exam questions. You can’t write a lab report with a first-person viewpoint. Mario Kart is more challenging when you wear chemistry goggles. The result? Stacey did a one-eighty and found her niche as a writing major, with her work being published in magazines, newspapers and online. She specialized in creative non-fiction, which allowed her to develop a personable, yet factual, writing style. And even though Stacey ditched physics, she’s thankful for her knowledge when she needs to write about scientific subjects. As a research junkie, Stacey loves her job’s diverse subject matter. She loves writing about unusual things and finds herself becoming genuinely interested in the subject matter.

She also loves the creative freedom and the social interaction. Even though writing itself is often solitary, working for a social media marketing company allows her instantly connect with others through her words. Other than writing, Stacey loves reading, hiking, playing softball, tinkering with the harp and piano and criticizing punctuation errors in restaurant menus. And even though she now lives in Victoria, Stacey truly misses the snow and is always planning her next trip back to Saskatchewan.

He has taught basic computer courses, office courses, and provided one-on-one Macromedia Dreamweaver training as well as teaching the Internet Marketing portion of Q College’s Web Developer Diploma course. Simon also provides in-house tech support for Q College. In addition to Internet Marketing, Simon is skilled in Drupal Development, Wordpress, CSS, HTML, PHP, MySQL, amongst other aspects of web design.

One of the traits that makes Simon so amazing at his job is his superhuman efficiency when he gets in the “zone”. He puts on his headphones, shuts out the world, and accomplishes, in an afternoon, what it takes others a few days to do. His laid back, “no problem, we can do it” attitude inspires confidence and puts everyone he works with at ease. Simon’s genuine interest in social media means he does a remarkable job of keeping up with the ever-changing world of online marketing. When he can resist the siren song of his computer, Simon is likely doing something athletic or outdoorsy. He loves hockey, tennis, softball, mountain biking, running, and swimming as well as hiking and camping.
